Shielding is required in many electronic systems as an essential barrier to unwanted EMI/RF interference.
Shielded Components is a leading supplier of Rf / EMI shielding cans in New Zealand and exports these products internationally to manufacturers of radio, gps, and all types of telecommunications and electronic products.
If you have any questions about PCB level shielding designs, please contact our sales department sales@shieldedcomponents.co.nz, and we can offer no-obligation information on design ideas that may be suitable for your application.

PCB shields can be designed in a variety of ways, each suitable for different shielding, placement and maintainance functions.
|
|
- Simple folded can enclosure.Advantages: Simple and cost effective to design and manufacture. Can be packaged in tape and reel for automated placement.
Disadvantages: Once fixed to PCB, difficult to visually examine/repair components underneath without removing.
|
|
- Wall with removable lid.
Advantages: Allows easy inspection and repair of components.
Wall section can be machine placed and reflow solded allowing post production visual inspection/machine testing of components within. Can be packaged in tape and reel for automated placement.
Lid section is clipped on at a later stage. The lid can be designed either using a dimple/hole locking system, or fingered lid. Both provide a secure fit with good electrical contact at several points around the can.
Disadvantages: More complex/expensive than one piece design.

|
|
- Pinch Trim
Advantages: Totally sealed enclosure. Pinch trim manufacturing method results in straight sided shield with no corner seams.
Pinch trim uses less valuable PCB space and has good co-planalarity (well within 0.05mm).
Can be packaged in tape and reel for automated placement, and reflow soldered.
Disadvantages: Once fixed to PCB, difficult to visually examine/repair components underneath without removing.

|
|
- Foot
Advantages: Totally sealed enclosure.
Drawn can with external foot. Popular stype for reflow soldering and good co-planalarity (well within 0.05mm).
Can be packaged in tape and reel for automated placement, and reflow soldered.
Disadvantages: Once fixed to PCB, difficult to visually examine/repair components underneath without removing.
|
|
Advantages: These types of designs allow coverage of larger areas of a PCB to selectively shield and cater for differing components heights. Can be solded to the PCB or fixed using fastners/inserts.
|
|
Advantages: Two piece enclosure with removable lid.
The PCB is usually fixed within base unit and the lid fitted on top, creating total shielding around the entire circuit board.

As well as the design ideas above, shields can also include any or all of the following options:
- Through holes and slots for heat dissipation and component adjustment
- P.C.B. Mounting pin styles in any design or configuration
(through hole or surface mount)
- Spot welded or soldered seams for extra strength and reliability
- High quality tin plating allows soldering to ensure a reliable electrical contact
for effective shielding performance
- Names or part numbers etc embossed upon the shield surface
- There are virtually no limits on size or shape!
- Quantities from 10 - 100,000+

There are a number of choices of materials that can be used for PCB EMI / Rf shields.
Tinplated Steel
Nickel Silver Alloys
Brass
Phosphor Bronze
Stainless Steel
The most popular material in use is Tinplated Steel. The advantages of this material are its low cost, excellent solderablity, is RoHS complaint and has an attractive finish. High quality tin plating allows soldering to ensure a reliable electrical contact for effective shielding performance. We stock this material in 0.20mm 0.21mm 0.22mm 0.25mm 0.35mm in a number of different tempers.
Nickel Silver alloys are also frequently used for shielding applications. This is a more expensive material, but suitable for specific applications. |

Tape and reel packaging of shields and components is avaliable on our in-house packaging machine. We are able to process 8-72mm wide carrier tapes, to package your components for high speed automated pick and place operations. We also offer a contract service to package any other of your mechanical/electronic components into tape and reel. Please contact us if you require any additional information regardng this service.
